Itinerary
Arrive at Islamabad International Airport where Broad Peak Adventures team will greet you. Transfer to comfortable hotel in Pakistan's modern capital nestled against Margalla Hills. After settling in, enjoy refreshing tea/coffee and meet fellow trekkers. Take afternoon to rest and recover from flight, perhaps strolling through tree-lined streets or visiting iconic Faisal Mosque. Evening welcome dinner with comprehensive trek briefing, gear check, and Q&A session. Perfect moment to bond with group and feel excitement for journey ahead.
After hearty breakfast, head to airport for breathtaking 45-minute flight to Skardu, gateway to Karakoram. Flight offers jaw-dropping views of Nanga Parbat (8,126m), Gondogoro La pass, and snow-capped peaks—possibly K2 on clear day. Land at Skardu's upgraded international airport, transfer to cozy hotel in charming town called Little Tibet for Balti heritage. Spend afternoon exploring vibrant bazaar or relaxing by mighty Indus River. Meet Balti porters and crew. If weather prevents flying, scenic 9-hour drive to Naran for overnight stay.
Delightful blend of exploration and preparation while acclimatizing to Skardu's altitude. Guided tour to Kharpocho Fort (16th-century stronghold with panoramic Indus River views), Sadpara Lake (turquoise gem for lakeside lunch), 8th-century Buddha Rock (relic of Buddhist past), and Kachura Village with serene lakes. Explore bustling Yadgar Chowk memorial and bazaar for souvenirs. Team handles logistics—permits, transport, gear checks—ensuring trek readiness. If road to Jhola blocked, may drive to Askole for overnight to keep schedule on track.
Drive through scenic Shigar Valley following Braldu River to Askole, last inhabited village before Karakoram wilderness. Journey showcases dramatic valleys and traditional Balti villages. Upon arrival, meet your dedicated porters who will support trek, explore village with traditional homes and terraced fields, and settle in for night before starting actual trek tomorrow. Askole serves as final preparation point with basic amenities before entering remote mountain terrain.
Official trek begins along beautiful Braldu River, passing traditional fields and small settlements. Cross sturdy bridges and follow well-marked trails amid stunning mountain scenery including first glimpses of towering peaks. Arrive at Jhola camp in afternoon with magnificent views of Bakhor Das and Paiju Peak. This relatively gentle start allows body to adjust to trekking routine and mountain environment while building excitement for challenges ahead.
K2 Base Camp trek officially begins with 21km journey through Braldu Gorge to Paiju camp in Central Karakoram National Park. Trail starts with gentle climb out of gorge, weaving through flat paths and crossing small streams. Paiju camp tucked beneath towering Paiju Peak is lively hub with excellent facilities including washbasins, toilets, litter bins. Evening join Balti porters around bonfire for traditional singing and dancing. First glimpse of Baltoro Glacier and iconic Trango Towers, with K2 teasingly visible in distance.
Meet the mighty Baltoro Glacier, one of largest non-polar glaciers on Earth. Trek hour to dramatic glacier snout where meltwater roars out in cascade. Cross glacier's rocky, rubble-strewn surface (no technical equipment needed but sturdy boots recommended). Lunch at scenic Liligo camp with possible wildlife sightings. Climb steep hill to grassy meadow leading to Khoburtse camp beside glacier. Camp offers unrivaled views of Uli Biaho and Trango Towers with golden spires glowing at sunset.
Wake to mesmerizing sunrise over Trango Tower. Short but demanding 6km trek climbing Baltoro Glacier's lateral moraine and occasionally its surface. Undulating path passes striking Nameless Towers, leading to historic Urdukas camp by early afternoon. Perched 100m above glacier, Urdukas established in 1909 by Duke of Abruzzi's K2 expedition offers sweeping views of Cathedral Peak and Baltoro's expanse. Last camp with toilets, basins, litter bins feels like small oasis in wilderness.
Crucial rest and acclimatization day allowing body to adjust to thinning air at 3,900m. High altitudes bring lower oxygen levels which can cause fatigue or other symptoms. Resting at Urdukas instead of Paiju maximizes safety and comfort for climb ahead—strategy honed over 40 years of leading K2 treks. Urdukas' grassy campsite offers cleaning facilities and serene atmosphere. After breakfast, relax, read, or join short acclimatization walk with views of Gasherbrum and Broad Peak. Guides share high-altitude trekking tips and Balti culture stories.
Refreshed from rest day, set out for Goro II with 12km trek beginning with poignant moment passing small graveyard where porters honor those lost in Baltoro region. Trail transitions from moraine to glacier's smoother surface for easier walking. Masherbrum (7,821m), Karakoram's radiant queen, comes into view followed by Gasherbrum IV guiding toward K2. Stop lunch at Goro I, continue over ice dunes to sprawling Goro II campsite on glacier's rocky surface near army outpost. Layer up for chilly night with views of Broad Peak.
