Itinerary
Arrive at Karachi's Jinnah International Airport. Your guide meets you, transfers you to your hotel and gives you the evening to settle in. Overnight stay in Karachi.
Begin with the Quaid-e-Azam Residency and the magnificent white marble Mausoleum of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, founder of Pakistan. Visit Frere Hall, a Gothic-era colonial building set in gardens that now serves as a cultural centre. Explore the art-filled Mohatta Palace, one of the finest examples of Sindhi and Rajasthani architecture in the city. End at the National Museum of Pakistan for an overview of 5,000 years of civilisation. Overnight stay in Karachi.
Drive east out of Karachi to the Chaukandi Tombs, a field of intricately carved sandstone graves dating back to the 15th century. Continue to the Makli Necropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest funerary sites in the world with over half a million tombs spanning several centuries of Sindhi, Mughal and Persian architecture. Visit the Shah Jahan Mosque in Thatta, one of the finest Mughal mosques outside Lahore. End the day at Keenjhar Lake, one of Pakistan's largest freshwater lakes, for a peaceful overnight stay at the lakeside resort.
Visit Ranikot Fort, often called the Great Wall of Sindh — a 19th century fort with a perimeter wall stretching over 32 kilometres, making it one of the largest forts in the world. Continue to Sehwan for the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, one of the most spiritually charged places in Pakistan. Every evening a powerful dhammal ritual takes place as devotees dance and drummers play in a state of spiritual ecstasy. Overnight stay in Sehwan.
Visit Mohenjo-Daro, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's earliest cities, built around 2500 BCE by the Indus Valley Civilisation. Walk the excavated streets, granaries and public baths of a settlement that was home to over 40,000 people when most of the world was still in the Bronze Age. Continue to Sukkur and visit Sadhu Bela Island Temple, a Hindu pilgrimage site on a rocky island in the Indus River, the leaning Masum Shah Minar and the historic Lansdowne Bridge. Overnight stay in Sukkur.
Visit Uch Sharif, a city that was once one of the great centres of Islamic scholarship in the medieval world. The Tomb of Bibi Jawindi is among the most beautifully decorated medieval tombs in South Asia, its blue and white tile work defying the centuries. Continue to Bahawalpur and visit Noor Mahal, an extraordinary Italian Renaissance palace built in 1872 by the Nawab of Bahawalpur. Overnight stay in Bahawalpur.
Drive deep into the Cholistan Desert to reach Derawar Fort. Its 40 massive circular bastions rise without warning from the flat desert floor, visible for miles in every direction. One of the most dramatic fortresses in South Asia. Visit the adjacent Abbasi Jamia Shahi Mosque before driving to Multan. Hotel check-in and overnight stay in Multan.
Visit the shrine of Bahauddin Zakariya, one of the most revered Sufi saints of the subcontinent, and the towering shrine of Shah Rukn-e-Alam, a masterpiece of Tughluq architecture. Drive north to Harappa, one of the two great cities of the Indus Valley Civilisation dating back to 2600 BCE. Continue to Lahore for overnight stay.
Visit the Shalimar Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1641. Travel to Wagah Border for the famous flag-lowering ceremony at sunset, a thunderous daily military parade on the Pakistan-India border that draws thousands of spectators. Explore Lahore's vibrant local bazaars for shopping and street food. Overnight stay in Lahore.
A full day inside Lahore's Mughal heart. Pass through Delhi Gate into the Walled City. Visit the Shahi Hammam, a beautifully preserved 17th century royal bathhouse. Stand in the courtyard of Wazir Khan Mosque, considered the most ornate mosque of the Mughal era. Walk to the Badshahi Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world, and explore Lahore Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wander the surrounding historic streets and bazaars. Overnight stay in Lahore.
