Itinerary
Arrive at Islamabad International Airport where your guide will meet you and transfer you to your guesthouse. Rest and prepare for the expedition ahead.
Depart Islamabad and travel by road through the dramatic mountain scenery of northern Pakistan to Chitral. The journey passes through the Lowari Tunnel and into the Chitral valley, arriving by evening.
Board a 4x4 jeep and head north from Chitral into the Upper Chitral valley towards Yarkhun, locally known as Lasht. The road follows the Yarkhun River through increasingly remote Wakhi settlements, with the Hindu Kush rising on all sides.
Continue deeper into the Wakhan Corridor, travelling from Yarkhun towards Lashkargaz — the last outpost before the high-altitude trekking begins. The landscape becomes wilder and more open as you approach the roof of the world. Set up camp and prepare for the trek ahead.
The centrepiece of the expedition — a trek to Karambar Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world sitting at over 4,200 metres above sea level. Horses are provided to support the journey, carrying gear and assisting where needed. The lake sits on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, surrounded by glaciers and snow-capped peaks in complete silence.
Begin the return journey from Lashkargaz, travelling back through the Wakhan valley to Chilmirabad. If the timing aligns, this stretch may offer a chance to witness local Yak Polo or Buzkashi — traditional games played in the open valleys of Upper Chitral.
Continue the return journey south through the Yarkhun valley, reaching either Mastuj or Chitral by evening depending on road conditions. A long but scenic drive through the heart of Chitral district.
Spend the day in the Kalash Valley, home to one of Pakistan's most ancient and distinct indigenous communities. Explore the traditional villages of Bumburet, visit the local museum, and experience the Kalash way of life — their crafts, customs, and centuries-old traditions.
Depart Chitral in the morning and make the long return journey to Islamabad through the mountain roads of northern Pakistan.
A flexible backup day built in for any road or weather delays on the route. If the tour has gone to schedule, use the day for a light exploration of Islamabad before your departure.
Helpful answers
Very remote. Beyond Yarkhun, mobile coverage disappears and facilities are minimal. This is a genuine off-the-beaten-path expedition, not a comfort tour.

Buzkashi is a traditional Central Asian sport played on horseback, where riders compete to carry a goat carcass across a goal line. It is widely played across the Wakhan and Pamir regions and is one of the most thrilling spectacles in the area.
June to September. The high-altitude passes and trekking routes to Karambar Lake are inaccessible outside of this window.
Approximately 7–9 hours. From Chitral, the journey into the Upper Chitral valley towards Yarkhun takes another full day by 4x4.
